What Is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymph Drainage is a gentle hands on therapy that uses rhythmic skin stretching techniques to move lymphatic fluid from the limbs and head back to the torso and into the venous circulatory system. MLD is a therapy that was first developed in Europe in the 1930s by Drs. Emil and Estrid Vodder who found that their technique helped support patients with abnormal swelling in the body and with chronic respiratory and immune problems.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage has been a standard therapy in the medical systems of Europe and is now also quite common in physiotherapy globally. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is used extensively in care for people who have lymph nodes removed or damaged during cancer treatment or from other surgeries or injuries. This can create a blockage in the lymphatic flow and a condition called Lymphedema. MLD can also manage acute swelling after a surgery or injury when the lymphatic system has not been damaged.

Many types of therapists now learn this technique including massage therapists and other allied health professionals. In addition to its focus on the lymphatic system, MLD has a soothing effect on the central nervous system due to its light touch and rhythmic strokes. If you’re wondering if MLD could help you or someone you care for improve their health, set up an appointment with Sarah to explore this option.
